Bluff,
buffer, cobble beach and shallow subtidal habitat.
(G. Siani, NOAA, 2002)
Completed in 2000. Following solicitation of proposed restoration project
site names from students at a tribal school and in consultation
with a Puyallup tribal linguist, the Puyallup tribal representatives
proposed names for five projects. One of those sites,
the Oline Parcel, has been renamed "Yowkwala."
It is pronounced "yowk*wa*la" and means "eagle."
The project site, approximately 15 acres in size, is
located between the Tyee Marina and Browns Point. The Trustees
removed two derelict barges from
the shoreline, along with a dilapidated drydock, and other
wooden debris. Woody debris was placed in front of
the marsh in order to provide a protective barrier and
to encourage growth of the marsh vegetation.

in the site acquisition and the beach cleanup activities
in conjunction with its acquisition.
Restoration Activities
Cleanup
and construction activities
(J. Steger, NOAA)
The beach cleanup restoration involved demolishing and
disposing of two derelict, wooden barges stranded on the
shoreline of the property and removing from the site the
debris from one former drydock and a sunken concrete float.
The barges were demolished on-site using minimal construction
equipment then hauled away using an existing access road.
The majority of the wood debris was chipped and recycled
rather than transported to a landfill. The demolition
of the barges occurred at low tide to minimize any risks
or impacts to the marine environment.
This site was designed to be consistent with the overall
Trustee vision for selected sites along Marine View Drive
by enhancing the nearshore and intertidal habitats for
salmonid and benthic resources and providing an unobstructed
corridor along the shoreline which encompasses the intertidal
area and extends into the Bay to a depth of at least -10
feet (MLLW). This site is being held in trust by the Puyallup
Tribe of Indians. Citizens for a Healthy Bay provides both monitoring and stewardship assistance at this site.
From I-5 take Exit 137. Turn right and follow 54th Ave. E. Turn right at 509 N. (aka Marine View Drive). An easy way to ensure that all three Marine View Drive sites are identified (Yowkwala,Squally Beach, and Skookum Wulge) is to go to the Cliff House Restaurant on Marine View Drive (on the left) and then turn around and drive south looking for three project signs on the right side of the road. The project can be seen from the second turnout down from the Cliff House Restaurant. It can also be seen at the end of the parking lot of the Nest Marina but permission is required to enter the Marina property.
