Completed in 1992. This project was conducted as part of a December 1991
settlement with Simpson
Tacoma Kraft Co., Champion International Corp. (owners
and operators of a pulp mill), and Washington Department
of Natural Resources (WDNR) (owner of contaminated submerged
lands) at the St. Paul Waterway Problem Area, of Commencement
Bay (Washington) Nearshore/Tideflats Superfund Site. The
settlement recognized the work done by Simpson and Champion
in creating new intertidal habitat in connection with
the remediation of a 17-acre area of the St. Paul Waterway.
Simpson Tacoma Kraft Co. conducts yearly tours (in approx.
June) of the cap and the habitat. Monitoring reports on
the efficacy of the cap and the habitat will be available
at this site at a later date. They are also available
by contacting Simpson Tacoma Kraft Co. and the Environmental
Protection Agency, Seattle office.
