Jordan Property
(also known as the Hylebos Creek
Off-Channel Restoration Project)

Completed Hylebos Creek Off-Channel Restoration
Completed Jordan/Hylebos Creek Off-Channel Restoration (P. Cereghino, 2006)

Project Summary

Completed in 2005. The Trustees, through the Restoration Account, along with Pierce County and the City of Fife, purchased 15.3 acres of property in the City of Fife. Design objectives included enhancing intertidal area for juvenile salmonid migration, establishing off-channel habitat for juvenile salmonids, and protecting the site for natural resources. The Trustees created fish rearing and feeding habitat and assumed responsibility for the design, construction, and management of the stream restoration project. The City of Fife is the landowner.

Restoration Activities

This +15-acre site has significant potential for habitat enhancement. A Phase 1 environmental site assessment and an appraisal were completed for the property in 2002, along with an additional appraisal and a Cooperative Agreement with the Pierce County Conservation Futures Program and the City of Fife. The City of Fife holds the property title and the Trustees maintain development rights. In 2003, field surveying and wetland delineation were completed, along with design drafting of more detailed layout and grading plans. The Trustees initiated permitting applications in 2004 and completed site construction in 2005.

Yearly plantings and site monitoring under the Baywide Monitoring Program occur with the assistance of Friends of the Hylebos (FOH), Restoration Logistics, and the Washington Conservation Corps.

FUNDING

The Trustees contributed approximately $1,300,00.00 from the Commencement Bay Restoration Account toward the acquisition, planning, design, construction, and implementation of the project. Additional funds will be directed toward stewardship and monitoring activities.
